Review: Dead Men (and Women) Walking horror anthology

Horror Gloria Howard-Ridley provides us with a brief review of Dead Men (and Women)Walking, a quirky assortment of short stories and poetry that revels in the walking dead: Zombie tales make up the majority of the book, but there are a few appearances by vampires and other manner of undead as well.

Dead Men (and Women)Walking is a quirky assortment of short stories and poetry that revels in the walking dead. Zombie tales make up the majority of the book, but there are a few appearances by vampires and other manner of undead as well.

Fans of the zombie sub-genre will be delighted by the way many of the tales simply wallow in the death and carnage of a good old fashion zombie plague. Many of the stories are new variants of the typical zombie story ala Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Sole survivors trying to escape the clutches of the relently hordes of zombies that want to eat them. But several of the stories add an interesting twist to the standard formula, making this collection a good read for horror readers who may not normally like zombie stories.

One of the standout stories in the collection is Josh Benton's Waking Finnegan, in which a wake for a departed friend goes horribly wrong when a fight breaks out. In this darkly funny take, these zombies are not after brains, however, but something a bit more important to the Irish community they overrun.

Old Habits, New Habits by Arthur Sanchez is another standout. In this tale, we are presented with a world where humanity is not so much trying to destroy the zombies, but help them integrate into society. And two zombies involved in the "Zombies Are People 2" program come up with a unique method of doing just that.

Overall, this is the perfect collection for zombiephiles and folks looking for something a bit off center in their horror readings.
