Beyond the Veil of Stars

Buy From Amazon UK Or The US
Last year I was very impressed by Robert Reed when I read "The Hormone Jungle" - which I picked up cheaply. I won't tell you how much I paid for this American import but I can certainly recommend reading it if you like an original adventure story.

The hero, Cornell, starts off as a typical sort of kid you find in american suburbia. His Dad is a bit weird (he researches UFO sightings), and his neighbours are normal americans. The initial tale of Cornell growing up is well written enough to hold your interest. The only reminder that this is a science fiction novel is that the sky has suddenly stopped being full of stars and now shows the other side of the Earth - as if the Earth had suddenly been inverted inside out. The second part of the novel gets more inter planetary as we discover more about the folded space around the Earth. Cornell - now an adult - gets a job as one of many new astronauts in the kind of American mission where you send out as many people as possible and ignore the casualties. We get a classic "survival on a new world" and "first contact" story with (I think) new twists.
