 | | | Diesel eBooks founder and President, L. Scott Redford today announced the launch of the company's online ebook store (diesel-ebooks.com); another sign that the once troubled industry is staging a vigorous comeback. The Open eBook Forum (OeBF), an industry organization, released a report in June showing that eBooks are the fastest growing segment of the publishing industry. In the first quarter of 2004, eBook sales increased 46 percent to 421,955 units compared with 288,400 in the first quarter of 2003. According to the OeBF, certain segments appear to be fueling a lot of the eBook growth; particularly commuters, vacationers, and business travelers."
Diesel hopes to differentiate itself by reducing the time required for a customer purchase and offering an extensive inventory of titles in multiple, secure formats including Microsoft, Adobe and Palm Readers. According to Redford, customers will be able to make their selection faster from over 35,000 titles using 50 categories and 2,300 sub-categories in addition to a robust search tool. He states, "Customers have told us they want an easy search and a smooth, reliable download measured in seconds. If a visitor wants a book on historical fantasy, they shouldn't have to wade through all the fantasy titles in contemporary and horror. Now they won't have to."
Diesel customers will be able to maintain their own "wish list" and enjoy free membership in a Frequent Buyer Program where accumulated points can be redeemed as discounts. Plans are for Diesel eBooks to add hundreds of titles each month from publishers such as HarperCollins, Holtzbrinck, iPublish, McGraw-Hill, Penguin Putnam, Simon & Schuster, and Wiley. Redford's experience includes the July launch of eBook Rapture, which focuses on romantic fiction and will be assimilating under Diesel eBooks.
